Frankfurt / Brussels -- Toyota Motor Europe presented its Supplier Award for Superior Performance in Project Management for 2005 to the Continental Automotive Systems Division on March 30, 2006. In doing so, Toyota paid tribute to the supplier’s performance in the development, production preparation and delivery of the brake system of the new Yaris subcompact car. This was the first time that Toyota transferred the system responsibility for a complete brake system to Continental Automotive Systems. Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, President of Continental Automotive Systems and Member of the Executive Board, Continental AG accepted the highest level of award that Toyota presents to suppliers during the Annual Business Meeting of Toyota Motor Europe in Brussels.
A new stage in a successful collaboration

In the Annual Business Meeting convened by Toyota Motor Europe in Brussels Expo, Dr. Neumann said, “This award shows that we meet the standards of Toyota, a company whose name stands for top-notch quality all over the world." Dr. Neumann continued in saying that the fact Continental Automotive Systems was so well able to meet the expectations of this demanding customer for the first time in the role of system supplier gave him great pride and pleasure. Toyota presents the Supplier Award in the four categories project management, supply, cost management and quality.

With Toyota, Continental Automotive Systems continues a long-term partnership as a supplier of brake components and sub-systems in Europe and North America. The cooperation in Project Yaris started in 2002. Because new Yaris is the first Toyota car for which Continental Automotive Systems has had total responsibility for the brake system, teams were formed in both companies for the close collaboration of the coming years. The expanded responsibility of Continental Automotive Systems ultimately consisted of designing and integrating the complete brake system concurrent with the vehicle development process of the new Yaris. The development work itself proceeded on two continents. The hydraulic brake was developed in Frankfurt while the electronic brake was developed and tested in Japan utilizing the Continental Automotive Systems testing grounds in Asahi and Mombetsu. Joint tests were performed together with Toyota engineers in Europe as well.

Continental Automotive Systems produces components for the brake system of the new Toyota Yaris in six European plants. Three additional suppliers are directly integrated. The equipment level ranges from electronic brake systems like ABS and ESC with brake assist, master cylinder and brake booster via active wheel speed sensors and floating caliper wheel brakes for the front and rear axle, brake discs and drums as well as the ESC sensor cluster and including the parking brake mechanism.

Positive feedback from dealers, customers and automotive journals

“The collaboration was exciting, constructive and supported by a great deal of confidence on both sides,” is how Dr. Bernd Herbst, Head of Sales, Marketing and Business Development of Continental Automotive Systems looks back at the project. “In the Yaris project, we again put our competence in the development, integration, production and delivery of complex systems to the test.” The feedback from dealers and customers was consistently good. The media reaction was also positive: “Various automotive magazines rated the Yaris brake system very highly in tests and comparative tests.” As far as braking performance and comfort, vehicle stability as well as pedal feel are concerned, the new Yaris was suddenly at the top of its class.

The Continental Corporation is a leading supplier of brake systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers. In 2005 the corporation realized sales of € 13.8 billion. At present it has a worldwide workforce of around 80,000.
